For over 200 years, Lithuania was an ally of Poland; the partnership came to an end in 1795 post which most of Lithuania came under the Russian empire. Germany also occupied Lithuania for a period before the eastern European nation became independent on 17th February 1918.
Independence day is celebrated with great festive spirit with the whole nation painted in the national colours of yellow, green and red. Schools, businesses and other organisations are shut down and people take part in various processions and events across the nation on this national holiday.
Free concerts are organised by Lithuaniana National Opera and Ballet Theatre at the cathedral square where family and friends gather to witness the celebrations while savouring Lithuanian specialties like Cepelinai dumplings and Sakotis.
