Lithuania’s president: I received a list of demands on my very first meeting with Putin

VILNIUS – In an interview with Delfi, Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaite said that during her first meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, she quickly became aware of his “requirements”.

She noted that Putin immediately began to put forward his unacceptable demands to her.

“From the very first meeting with Mr Putin, I received a list of requirements that Lithuania should comply with like not  building a nuclear power plant, to cooperate with them, etc.. It was not an offer to be friends or to work together, but was a “you kneel and obey, or you are our enemy”. I could not accept such a relationship”, – said Grybauskaite.

President Grybauskaitė also rejected an offer from Putin to participate in the construction of a nuclear power plant in the Kaliningrad region.

Grybauskaitė told the BNS agency that Putin had invited Lithuania to take part in the €3.6 billion plant project, which was to be located just 12 kilometers from the Lithuanian border, but she said she refused the offer.
