(VILNIUS) – Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaite is to meet with USA President Donald Trump in Warsaw this week, the Lithuanian president’s office announced on Tuesday.
According to the announcement, Grybauskaite is to meet Trump during his visit to neighboring Poland where he is a guest speaker at a meeting of 12 Eastern and Central European countries for the Three Seas Initiative on Thursday.
It will be the third meeting in six months between Grybauskaite and top-ranking USA officials from the new administration.
“The visit of the highest-ranking USA official to the Baltic Sea region is viewed internationally as an attempt to demonstrate a special attention to security of the Baltic and Eastern European countries and to once again express the U.S. commitment to NATO’s collective defense,” said the president’s office.
Since 2014, Lithuania, a member of NATO’s eastern flank, has increased its defense capabilities and asked for stronger allied presence in the region.
Later this month, Grybauskaite, together with presidents of the Baltic states, are to meet USA Vice President Mike Pence in Estonia’s capital of Tallinn, according to the president’s office.
