President Grybauskaite attends advance screening of film “Ashes in the Snow”

Washington D.C. – Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaitė, who is in the United States on an official visit, attended the screening of the film “Ashes in the Snow” at the Capitol Building on Wednesday.
The drama film – to be released this coming October – is based on the best-seller “Between Shades of Gray” by Rūta Šepetys. It follows the life of a teenage Lithuanian girl deported to Siberia, who fights for survival and humanity in an Arctic forced-labor camp.
According to the President, it is a true story about Lithuania’s destiny, deportations, sufferings, and unconditional fight for freedom. The film will be released in the West as a worldwide testimony of truth about a nation that resisted and survived annihilation.
It is symbolic that the film’s screening took place in America – a country that had never recognized the occupation of Lithuania. The President said that “Ashes in the Snow” would enable the American people to better understand the Baltic countries and why they treasure freedom and independence so much. It would also be the best proof that America was right to support Lithuania.
The President met with Rūta Šepetys, the author of the book and the film’s executive producer, and Marius M. Markevičius, Lithuanian film director living in the United States. Among the other guests at the screening was Congressman John Shimkus, who co-chairs the House Baltic Caucus, and members of the diplomatic corps.
“Between Shades of Gray”, a New York Times bestseller, has been translated into 27 languages and included into the U.S. high school literature list.
