How President Grybauskaite will celebrate Lithuania’s centennial

VILNIUS – President Dalia Grybauskaitė invites everybody to celebrate the Centennial of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania and to be fully involved in festive events. She will personally present the most creative festivity teams with national tricolor flags.
The centenary celebrations will start on Thursday, February 14. At 12.00 noon, the President will hand over flowers to the families of Independence Act signatories. At 2.00 p.m., she will open an interactive exhibition “Unforgettable Futures: Visions for Lithuania’s Centenary” at the Civic Education Center. The exhibition will be open to the public, with displays in Lithuanian and English, and with hearing impairment assistance.
On February 15, at 10.00 a.m., Dalia Grybauskaitė will award 100 persons with state decorations for their merits to Lithuania. At 3 p.m., she will present National Culture and Art Awards. In the evening, the President will have bilateral meetings with Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission. At the President’s invitation, many foreign dignitaries will attend the celebrations, including the presidents of Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Finland, Iceland, Ukraine, and Georgia, as well as Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. The welcoming ceremony will be broadcast live by the Lithuanian National Television on February 16, at 11 a.m.
The most important centenary event will take place in Daukantas Square on February 16, at 12.00 noon, where the ceremony of hoisting the flags of the three Baltic States will be held. It will culminate with the chime of church bells across Lithuania at 12.30 p.m. People are invited to attend the flag raising ceremony, which will also include three canon salutes, a flyover by fighter jets from NATO’s air policing mission, the reading of the Independence Act, and a formation parade of 100 Lithuanian national flags. Following the ceremony, at 1 p.m., the President will attend the Holy Mass at Vilnius Cathedral.
The traditional youth march “Road of Statehood” will be also held in Vilnius. People are invited to join the march that starts at 10.00 a.m. in Cathedral Square. It will end in Rasų Cemetery with tribute of respect to the signatories and the reading of the Independence Act. February 16 will be commemorated by the House of the Signatories at 2.30 p.m. in Pilies Street, and 100 bonfires of freedom will be lit by well-know public figures along Gediminas Avenue at 5.00 p.m.
In the evening, festive concerts will take place in Cathedral Square and at the National Opera and Ballet Theatre. Gala concert “Gloria Lietuvai” will be broadcast live at 6:00 p.m. by the Lithuanian Radio and Television. The free open-air concert in Cathedral Square will gather the most popular singers of Lithuania to perform patriotic songs. A huge bell-shaped LED screen will be displayed at the concert and will continue to stand until March 11.
For the sixth consecutive year now, a nation-wide campaign to celebrate February 16 with creative innovation is held at the initiative of President Dalia Grybauskaitė. She will invite the authors of the most remarkable celebration ideas to the Presidential Palace and present them with Lithuanian tricolor flags. Ideas can be shared online at until February 20.
On February 17, Dalia Grybauskaitė will hold a bilateral meeting with President Andrzej Duda of Poland and a Polish delegation headed by him to discuss the strengthening of cooperation between Lithuania and Poland in the areas of defense, security, energy, and transport, as well as topical EU and NATO issues. Two important agreements are scheduled for signing: agreement between Lithuania and Poland on cross-border documentation and a memorandum on enhanced strategic cooperation in the field of energy.
